Lap BLankets For Wheelchair users

10/23/2020

SpiritCare's vice president, Jeanie, has been busy creating lap blankets which she was able to give to Pacifica Senior Living and Hopkins Manor, thanks to the baskets of yarn which Sunrise Senior Living communities on the San Francisco Peninsula generously donated at our 2019 Christmas Breakfast. Before the COVID19 pandemic SpiritCare visited these communities each month for worship services with music:
  • Sunrise of Belmont
  • Sunrise of Burlingame
  • Sunrise of San Mateo, and
  • Sunrise of Palo Alto

How about getting a group of friends together make squares that you can sew into lap blankets for older adults in wheelchairs? Just let us know by filling in our Contact form and we can tell you how many squares you need. You can knit or crochet the squares. As the weather gets colder, when care community residents are pushed outside they will welcome a cozy blanket.

Here are some of the lap blankets that Jeanie made. Thank you Sunrise and thank you Jeanie.

Board member Aki Amai is the music director at St Catherine of Siena church in Burlingame, CA. Here the church choir is singing Lead Me Lord by Samuel Sebastian Wesley.
Lead me Lord, Lead me in Thy righteousness,
Make my way plain before my face.
For it is Thou Lord, Thou Lord only
That makest me dwell in safety.
Psalm 5:8 Lead me, Lord, in your righteousness because of my enemies — make your way straight before me.

Imagine

From the Peninsula Girls' Chorus

Our board member Aki Amai, currently director of music at St Catberine of Siena School in Burlingame, and director of Grace Notes Community Music School has been an accompanist for the Peninsula Girls' Chorus. The performance here, of John Lennon's "Imagine" here is without accompaniment.

The song starts off by imagining what it would be like with no heaven or hell, with just the sky above us. It then goes on to imagine there are no countries, no religion, no possessions, no greed and no hunger. The vision is of a united world.

We can imagine and dream, but we know there are countries, religion, possessions, greed and, sadly, hunger. The song imagines peace and sharing. SpiritCare also brings peace and sharing to care communities, inspired by Jesus Christ and Christians through the years.

The song says "I hope some day you'll join us and the world will be as one".  We hope you will join SpiritCare and help unite people, both young and old.
Thank you to the Peninsula Girls Chorus and Karyn Silva for this performance. Thank you Ana &  Ana, Atiya, Elena, Elise, Ereni, Maeley, Maya, Mira, Rosie and Tori.  Share it with the seniors in your life.

From Charlyne and St Andrews Presbyterian Church, Pacifica.

Thank you to Charlyne and St Andrews Presbyterian Women who made lap quilts. The quilts have straps on them to hold them in place. Stitches at the corner of each square hold the layers of the quilt together.

Some have beautiful details like this one with birds on it. Others have flowers and colorful designs.

Thank You For Craft Supplies

Paula and her family packed boxes of craft supplies for some of the care communities that SpiritCare usually visits. Given the COVID-19 pandemic, boxes were left outside the residences on tables to help mitigate spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

The boxes were carefully marked for specific care communities. Some requested scrapbooks, others materials for making cards. The boxes contained ribbons, stickers and tags for decorating books of memories.

Here's a video to share with your friends, family and care community residents.

It was made by a brother, Nate, and sister, Noel, who hope you enjoy the antics of their family pet, Cody. Let them know your reaction by commenting below.

Cody loves to snuggle. He can make his own bed and loves to nap in the sun. A ball of joy, he loves to run in the yard and tear up paper towels.

Nate and Noel end with a prayer to you all.
